In Memory: Mark Swope May 14, 1953–Dec. 19, 2016: We are so sad to share with our community that Mark Swope, photographer and friend, died on December 19, 2016, after an 18-month battle with cancer. Mark found us fifteen years ago, when he decided that he wanted to donate darkroom equipment and books from his dad, photographer John Swope, to a photo organization working with low-income kids. This marked the beginning of numerous, quiet acts of generosity, centered on a shared passion for photography, and sustained through occasional drinks at Fish Co, image-only email conversations, and "Mark's brand" beer slipped to him at all of Venice Arts' events.

We are so grateful for the many ways in which Mark, and his wife, Jasmine—also a photographer—have supported us: They made a generous gift each year, donated a piece to our annual photo auction, and held several exhibitions of their own work at Venice Arts as a gesture to expand our circle of support. He was even known to come in and help us hang an exhibition—buying us our first level ("eyeballing it" didn't work for Mark), and assuring that we understood exactly where the eye should settle on a print.

Our heartfelt love and support goes out to Jasmine, his step-daughters, his sister, Topo, and his circle of friends. A private memorial will be held in Mark's honor on Saturday, February 4, 2017.
