This January I traveled to Miami as a 2014 National Young Arts Foundation Finalist. This program has recognized greats such as Andy Warhol, Vanessa Williams, Nicki Minaj, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Wynton Marsalis. I am one of "The Mighty 8" photographers selected from 11,000 applicants from all over the country. During Young Arts week, I met with professional artists and fellow finalists of several mediums. I sat down with photographers Jeff Wolin and Debra Fleming Caffery, as well as Diana Stoll (of Aperture magazine). During my exhibition show, I talked to art collectors, as well as faculty from Columbia University and Harvard about my work. I also went on shoots and edited my work throughout the week. I went to Little Havana in Downtown Miami, the Winward Walls (the art district), and to South Beach. We shot, curated and had an entire show hung in 5 days! Connecting with the other artists inspired me to the fullest. The experience was extremely fulfilling and my work has been validated thanks to the time I spent with Young Arts. I was captivated by the talent that I was surrounded by. The fact that I was chosen at the same level of the amazing dancers, writers, singers, and filmmakers intensified the experience for me. I am so grateful for that opportunity. When I returned, I found out that I won the Young Arts Gold Medal (the highest award possible) and I was also nominated for the US Presidential Scholars recognition program, which is the highest honor for our country's youth! I have truly been inspired and motivated by Young Arts. Because of the encouragement of my peers and fellow artists, as well as the conversations I had with my new mentors, my love for the arts has progressed and developed. I will continue to follow my dreams and complete what I’ve started.
