Join us for two free professional development workshops for teaching artists:
Working with Youth on the Autism Spectrum, with Shay McAtee
Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 6:30–8:30pm
Photographer and Occupational Therapist Shay McAtee will provide an overview of the autism spectrum, providing clinical information, and sharing classroom management strategies for working more effectively. Ms. McAtee will also highlight photographs and stories about autism from The Spirit Within, her forthcoming publication. This is a unique opportunity for teaching artists and mentors to discuss challenges and successes they’ve experienced and learn from an expert.
The Blur Between Popular Culture and Experimental Art, with Paul Shepherd
Tuesday, March 12, 2013, 6:30–8:30pm
One of the essential issues in teaching is how to stay relevant to students' interests while introducing traditional, experimental, and popular arts. During this interactive workshop, Animator Paul Shepherd will explore the work of experimental animators and Venice Arts staff will introduce experimental photographers, filmmakers, and comic artists. Throughout the workshop, we’ll discuss aesthetic and narrative threads that weave throughout all these mediums, and how to bring this work into the classroom in a way that feels relevant to your students.
