Call for Curators: Venice Arts' 2014 Fresh Perspectives Visiting Curator Exhibition: Venice Arts is currently accepting proposals for its 2nd annual Fresh Perspectives Visiting Curator Exhibition, scheduled to take place in November–December 2014. The Venice Arts Gallery focuses on documentary photography, video, new media, and film by contemporary artists.
The goals of the Visiting Curator program are to engage innovative perspectives on documentary work—both traditional and experimental—in photography, film/video, and/or digital media, and to offer established and emerging curators in Los Angeles County the opportunity to present an original documentary exhibition in a professional nonprofit gallery. The curator is responsible for selecting the artists and artworks for the exhibition. Each proposed exhibition must consist of at least 4 artists and have a strong, unifying, and creative curatorial premise. Curators must live and/or work in Los Angeles County, however, the artists they select do not need to be LA residents. Proposals that incorporate a public program, performance, screening, or participatory workshop component are strongly encouraged. There is no fee to apply.
Curators must submit the following to be eligible for consideration:
-A curator’s statement detailing the proposed exhibition (up to 2 pages)
-Current resume(s) for curator(s)
-A list of artists included in the exhibition
-Digital images (as jpegs, 72 ppi and at least 1000px wide) from at least 4 included artists (10–20 images)
-Current resumes of all the included artists
Applications must be submitted via email to: Meg Whiteford, Gallery & Public Programs Assistant
Application deadline: June 1, 2014
Notification date: June 20, 2014
Exhibition Dates: November 15–December 12, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 15, 2014, 5–8pm
Venice Arts will provide the selected Visiting Curator with a $250 honorarium, assistance with installation and extensive marketing & communications services, including exhibition postcards (sent to over 4,000 addresses), outdoor signage, an email invitation (sent to over 4,000 subscribers), press outreach, and social media marketing across Venice Arts’ platforms. The Gallery will host an opening reception for the curator and artists, will staff the gallery during normal business hours, and handle sales (Venice Arts takes 50% commission on sales). Transportation of artworks to and from the gallery is the responsibility of the participating artists and/or Visiting Curator. Work must be framed and ready to hang, or otherwise professionally presented.
