24 Years of Media Arts Education & Mentoring (and counting!) / A gallery by Elysa

galleryinfo

24 Years of Media Arts Education & Mentoring (and counting!): Venice Arts was established in 1993 with ten kids, a darkroom in a donated basement, and a big dream: to create a vibrant arts center for low-income youth. Twenty-four years later, our award-winning Art Mentoring & Education program, has reached thousands of low-income youth, providing meaningful, media-based programs that builds creativity, literacy, and media, arts, and technology knowledge and skills.

The images in this gallery represent only a small selection of work by the talented participants in our programs, as well as the diverse projects we have completed over our 24-year history. From our core, Venice-based Art Mentoring & Education Program to Documentary Programs with participants such as homeless women in Los Angeles and children orphaned by AIDS in Mozambique, our programs teach underserved children and adults to create and share their stories through photography, film, and multi-media.

Art Mentoring & Education Programs include free media arts workshops for low-income youth at beginning to advanced levels, college readiness training for middle- and high-school age youth and their families, an Advanced Studies path where youth deepen their skills and receive help with applications for scholarships and competitions, an Internship Program with placements at Venice Arts and creative businesses, and a Bridge program for recent high school graduates. Watch this student-produced film to see how the Bridge program benefited Julie, now a student at CalArts. And check out this video short, which shares intern Jocelyn and NBC Law & Order:SVU editor Nancy Forner's perspectives on the benefits of our internship program.
