Remembering Carter: June 21, 1997 - January 10, 2016:
"My nightmares are filled with broken cameras and wasted film. I've been attending Venice Arts for the past nine years. It's an undeniable and ever-present part of my life, as it allows me to explore my interests and passions. As an American teenager, I embrace all the tropes and stereotypes assigned to me, but I don't accept them as a part of my life. Sometimes in life, people look at me in confusion and misunderstanding. I imagine those faces frozen on Polaroid film and hung in my room.

I am an idiot genius. An unpinned heart. An unpoisoned well. The result of a domino effect of many generations of crazy artists and historical badassery. I have access to a creative network of people who care and aren't afraid to criticize me in a constructive and mature way. That alone keeps me inspired, keeps me on the path of photography and the creation of more strange art.

I love my life and I love all the people who offer their support and opinions of my work."

---Artist Statement, Carter Irwin, Photo L.A., January 2014

Carter was an important part of the Venice Arts' community from ages 8 to 17. He was enrolled in comics, filmmaking, and photography, which ended up being his primary love. He was a sweet, funny, smart, and wonderful person and his many friends, mentors, and the artists who taught him will miss and remember him.

A memorial service will be heald Sunday, January 17 at the Venice Pier starting at 10am, with a gathering at the Terrace Cafe afterward. It is open to all friends and family.

Help his mom, Mykal, with his memorial costs by contributing here.

Read Carter's photo book created in Advanced Photo 2013–2014. The PDF is available free, and the book is available at-cost through Magcloud here.
