As an arts organization that receives support from the California Arts Council to support our arts education programs, we were thrilled to learn that there is movement in Sacramento to increase funding for the arts.
California currently ranks dead last among the states in per capita arts funding. But thanks to arts advocates around the state, our representatives are getting the message that the arts make our communities more vibrant places to live, learn, and work.
Senate Bill 1462, authored by Senator Ted Lieu, would allocate $25 million from the state's General Fund to the Arts Council. That is up from the current $1 million. Assembly Bill 1662, authored by Assembly member Ian Calderon, would also seek a substantial allocation from the General Fund to the Arts Council at a figure yet to be determined.
