Our Ocean's Edge: Youth Explore the Marine Environment:

“Children are nature’s pure expression of life. It’s important that we nurture their intuitive and emotional connection to our environment. And as we support them with the tools needed to explore and express themselves, we bring to mind that we are all connected to something greater than ourselves, and that everything we do on our planet matters.” Jasmine Swope, Our Ocean’s Edge

Join the students of Venice Arts as they explore California’s Marine Protected Areas in the inaugural Our Ocean’s Edge workshop. In this project, youth ages 10–13 learned about the intricate interdependence between humans and the ocean environment, gaining an understanding of watersheds, aquatic biodiversity and habitats, marine conservation, and pollution prevention through their photographic practice.

This first year of Our Ocean's Edge was offered as part of Venice Arts' ART + Science, Environment & Technology (ART/SET) track, which is designed around the premise that science and art share something of fundamental importance—creativity and inquiry—and that these capacities in youth deepen their learning in both areas, and contribute to their overall intellectual development. In fall 2015, we launch a second year of Our Ocean's Edge, continuing to promote environmental learning from the source.

A huge THANK YOU to photographer Jasmine Swope for initiating the Our Ocean's Edge project with Venice Arts.
