LEARN MORE ABOUT JULIE

“Photography helps me

Learn about myself.

Learn about the people I love.

To express the feelings that I cannot express.

And most importantly, it helps me grow.”

Julie began taking classes at Venice Arts when she was 17 years old, beginning in the fall of 2009 with the workshops Black & White Photography and Filmmaking in Action. For the past two years in the Advanced Projects Photography class, Julie has made beautiful and moving books of her photographs and writing. Several of the photographs from her first book were featured in the exhibition “Nuestra Placita Olvera,” organized by Venice Arts’ mentor Eric Ibarra through his nonprofit, Las Fotos Project. Last year, Julie served on the curatorial team for the Youth Arts & Media Festival, selecting photographs for the youth photography exhibition. Julie is currently studying at Santa Monica College, while continuing her involvement with Venice Arts through our new Bridge Program, a paid work placement funded by Jewish Vocational Services, and peer mentoring in an ArtPartner workshop at the Mar Vista Family Center.

Julie is now a junior at CalArts.
