LEARN MORE ABOUT JOAQUIM:

Joaquim was a 16-year-old participant in Venice Arts’ Documentary Program The House is Small but the Welcome is Big in Maputo, Mozambique. Since losing both parents to AIDS in 2001, Joaquim and his 20-year-old older sister, Albertina, have lived on their own, surviving through the support of the NGO Reencontro, who helps them with food and school fees. As money is Joaquim's biggest worry, he attends night school in order to look for work during the day.

Joaquim is a passionate artist who dreams of becoming a math professor. About The House Is Small, he says, "I love studying photography and the project. It has opened my eyes to new ways of seeing life. One day, I hope to fly overseas and see the world. (In the meantime) I want the world to see my photos and to come and see me, to see that I am a good friend and have a warm heart."
