Our son, Jake Colman passed away suddenly, unexpectedly, and tragically on December 28, 2013. He was 24 years old. In the depth of my grief, my mother, Bee Colman, a long-time Venice Arts' supporter, suggested I volunteer as a mentor to get me out of the house if nothing else.
I began my association with VA in February of 2014. It was a lifeline for me. Helping kids who were just beginning their photographic journey at the same age as I was when I held my first camera was a revelation. I had the great good fortune to be guided throughout my career by generous and knowledgeable mentors. This was a chance to give some of that back. Jake was an accomplished photographer and teacher in his own right and mentoring these budding young artists was a way to pass something of Jake on to them as well.
Since we have no heirs, planning our estate was somewhat of a conundrum; who would we leave it to? How would it do the most good? We hit upon the idea of creating a scholarship in his name, administered by Venice Arts. We intend to bequeath a substantial portion of our estate to Venice Arts for the creation of the Jake Colman Scholarship Fund. Venice Arts will be able to provide meaningful support to committed students in Jake’s name, an enduring legacy for our beautiful boy.
